History of Diversity in the Field: "Among the first female institutions of engineering was the School of Female Technical Education, founded by a woman named Hartzfeld and an electrical engineer Jean Laurent at the end of the First World War. The program provided female students with training in industrial drafting, and was expected to open up job opportunities in different branches of industry. Drafting was a new discipline for women and helped to create new roads of entry for women into industry, especially after the Second World War. Still, although women were allowed to move into drafting departments, they were not entitled to assume management positions. What is more, preparing students for the job market was a new idea in female education, since, up until the First World War, the education of girls was completely disconnected from professional objectives. The new school offered three programs, one for engineering aides and draftsmen, one for chemistry aides and chemists, and one for medical secretaries and X-ray assistants. It was financed with state funds and grants awarded by the Society of Electrical Engineers. In its first year, it had eight women graduates. Three years later, there were one hundred..." "Women engineers have been in the public limelight for decades, yet we have surprisingly little historically grounded understanding of the patterns of employment and education of women in this field.
