How to find reference, print, and eBooks in the Library Book Catalog

  • From the front page, click on Basic Search;

  • An international daily journal, provides regular coverage of the business of fashion. Mergers, Supreme Court rulings, and market changes that affect, or reflect, the stock, profitability, or other measures of textile industry well-being are reported.

Reference Books

Reference books include works such as specialized encyclopedias, atlases, and dictionaries. They are excellent places to start your search. You can:

  • Gather background information and gain a general overview on your topic;
  • Develop a list of keywords for online searching.

Use the Library Catalog to locate print books, reserve books, and reference books.

Note: Print Reference Books on the 1st Floor cannot be checked out of the library.

This work condenses Racinet's classic six-volume set, History of World Costume (1876-1888), and translates it into English for the first time. The text and 2,000 illustrations, most in full color, cover worldwide costumes from ancient Egypt to nineteenth-century Europe--royalty, the working class, soldiers, and the poor.

This detailed, well-written, and well-indexed work provides one of the few works of scholarship on twentieth century menswear.

Print Books

Fashion books in this category are usually marked “Books 2nd floor” or “Oversize 2nd floor”, but can also include “New Books” and “Bestsellers”. Circulating books can be checked out for two weeks, unless otherwise noted on the book, and may be renewed twice.  For more information on library policies, please see Borrowing.

EBSCOhost service eBooks

On your Library Catalog results list, you may see Electronic Books (eBooks) on the same results list for printed books in the library. Electronic books are listed in the Library Catalog, but these titles are actually part of a subscription database, EBSCOhost (eBook Collection) or Springer eBook Collection.

How to access EBSCOhost:

  •  From the Library Catalog, click on the eBook title to view the complete catalog record, then click on the Linked Resource to enter EBSCOhost.
  • From the Library homepage, go to the DATABASES link found on the homepage. Select EBSCOhost Service–> EBSCOhost Web–>eBook Collection.  As with all of the subscription databases, if you’re off campus, you need to enter the login with your student ID number and your last name. You can also access the databases by logging in to MyGateway and clicking on the FULLERTON tab. The databases links are listed on that page and you won’t need to log in to each database.

Reserve Books

Reserve Books are materials that instructors have put in the library for student use.  They are located behind the Reserve counter on the 1st floor. There are many books on fashion and historical costumes that can be checked out for short-term loan, usually for two hours or overnight.

Though some of the books listed below were published in the 20th century, each is a valuable tool for apparel and textile design students who conduct research using a well-balanced academic library textiles and clothing collection. Based primarily on artwork, Boucher’s costume history depicts the fashions of the European elite from prehistory to the mid-twentieth century. The text summarizes the evolution of costume within the Western world and offers useful background to students of costume history.

Presents the fashions of social elites from the Middle East and Western Europe from prehistory through the 1990s. The text draws on artwork, extant garments, and costume history scholarship to create a narrative that is simple enough for easy reference, but provides enough detail to be a useful beginning for costume historians. This book would also serve well as a reference for theatrical costuming.

A dictionary of costume illustrated with plentiful, clear line drawings. Wilcox’ works are classics of costume and fashion studies. Also recommended are her The Mode In Costume (General collection - 2nd floor: GT510 .W55), The Mode in Hats and Headdress (General collection - 2nd floor: GT2110 .W5), and Five Centuries of American Costume (General collection - 2nd floor: GT605 .W5).
