Guide standards, reusable content, and style guide.

Selected Guidelines

In order to maintain consistency across guides, use standardized terms. Some examples are:

  • e-book not ebook (E-book when used in a header or title)
  • journal not ejournal
  • catalog not catalogue
  • web not Web
  • email not e-mail (Email when used in a header or title)
  • Internet / internet: Capitalize when used as a noun (e.g. "on the Internet") but not when used as an adjective (e.g. "internet resources")
  • website not web site

Clear writing makes for a better user experience. Some ideas are as follows:

  • Use appropriate heading levels
  • Be informal (Write as if you were talking to a patron)
  • Use consistent punctuation, capitalization, and spacing
    • Oxford commas
    • Single-space after periods
    • Capitalization
  • Use lists
  • Use imperatives
  • Use common words
  • Use friendly URLs
