What is included in Nexis Uni? 

State and Federal (Supreme Court, U.S. Appellate, U.S. District) case law decisions (no state trial courts, no jury trials); State and Federal Codes, Regulations and Constitutions; law reviews; Shepardizing for all cases; as well as extensive U.S. and international news and company and industry information.

Do I have to set up an account to use Nexis Uni?

You do not need to set up an account to search Nexis Uni. You will use your MyGateway ID # and last name to access Nexis Uni from off-campus.

What appears below the search box when I start to conduct a search?

Suggests Sources, Documents, Legal Phrases

How do I find whether a particular source is in Nexis Uni? 

Go to Menu > All Sources > Search

When should I use the Advanced Search?

The Advanced Search option is useful when you need to conduct a very specific and targeted search. By using the tools and features available through Advanced Search you can cut down on unnecessary results and irrelevant information.  

Are all cases in Nexis Uni?

No, only case law--that is, cases that can be used as precedents in another case. Supreme Court, Appeals Court, and District Courts.

Can you get trial transcripts in Nexis Uni?

No, contact the court directly.

How do I find a case when I know the exact citations or parties?

Click on Get a Doc Assistance. You can then search directly by citation or party name.

How do I Shepardize a case in Nexis Uni? Or, how do I find related information to a particular case?

The most common method is to enter "shep:" in the search box, followed by your citation. (Example:. Shep:410 u.s. 113 )

You can also enter just the citation name in the search box, then click the Shepard's Signal™ indicator next to the document name in the full display.

Is Nexis Uni the only database at FC that contains law reviews?

Law journals are also available in other databases such as EBSCO Academic Search Complete and JSTOR. We also have trade journals and magazines related to the paralegal profession in Vocational Studies Complete. 

How do I browse a source, for example the Federal Register?

Click the stacks symbol next to the source title under the main search box

Can you find legal abbreviations in Nexis Uni?

Yes, under Get a Doc Assistance > Citation Formats

How can I look at a newspaper such as The Washington Post?

Choose box “A Publication”, choose a news source “Washington Post” do search, limit by date in Timeline for the most up-to-date news. 

How do I find company information? 

Type name of company in the “company info” box and choose an information type: Company Profile, All Company Information, etc.
