Google Scholar for FC Students (myGateway login required)
Google Scholar is a web engine that uses the Google search algorithm to search for scholarly literature, including peer-review journal articles, books, reviews, dissertations, conference proceedings and more. Results are ranked by the relevance of the search terms entered, as well as by the citation index score of the journal article.
PROS:
You can enter a large number of search terms,--even sentences--using Google's sophisticated natural language search technology.
You can connect to many freely available and relevant scholarly sources.
You can connect to library database sources here at Fullerton College--from almost any location.
CONS:
Many articles that populate near the top are relevant, but many lead you to a paywall.
It's not very easy to break down searches the way you can do so with databases.
Many sources found on the open web do not have convenient citation features.
Not all potential FC database sources will be listed.
NOTE: Google Scholar will automatically connect to FC Library content from any on-campus computer or WiFi signal.
NOTE: Google Scholar will work best with a browser with cookies enabled. Best browsers are Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.
How to connect off-campus and use Google Scholar:
1. Go to Google Scholar (scholar.google.com)
2. Go to Settings

3. Select 'Library Links.' You may also set any parameters on this page that suit your preferences. Hit Save.

4. Then enter 'Fullerton College' into the required textbox, click on the magnifying glass icon next to it

5. Check the Fullerton College Library - Full Text box and hit Save.

6. Enter keywords relevant to your research. Notice that FC Library links appear. Clicking these links will give you access to the articles on our databases. You will be prompted to enter your Gateway ID and password to access.

7. Clicking on Full Text, or Full View will often direct you to the full text of the articles you need. Clicking on most edu, .gov, or .org articles will often yield full text.
* Avoid clicking on links from Research Gate, academia.edu, and most .com/.net links--as these will often lead you to paywalls, or ask you to register with personal information.
