ENGL 101 Whitehall/Ishibashi Spring 2022

This guide serves as a launching pad to discover the types of resources available to you through the library and how you would use the databases to locate them.

Limiting Searches

Limit Your Search by Publication date or Source Type

Most of the databases have tools to help you limit your search. In OneSearch and the EBSCO databases for example, you can limit your search by publication date or source type. You can limit your results to Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals using the tools on the left-hand side of the screen. However, do NOT limit your search at the beginning of your research. You should use limiters like "scholarly peer-reviewed articles" after you've looked at all types of results for keywords and ideas that will help you construct the most effective searches.

You can also click on Show More above to limit to your choice of publication sources.

Limiting Your Search Using Fields

Limiting by Search Field

Use the drop-down menu to narrow your search by a field if you retrieve too many results.  Always start by NOT limiting your search fields so you can examine the initial results, particularly the keywords that appear in all the fields.

The SUBJECT field contains terms that describe the main subject content of the article or book. The SUBJECT or ABSTRACT(summary) fields are most useful for narrowing your search.

Limit by subject

Now, only results that have the term "Ageism" in the Subjects will appear. Remember to look for other possible search terms in the SUBJECTS.
