Congratulations to our 2023 Banned Books Essay Contest Winners!

  • 1st Place: “In Defense of The Catcher in the Rye” by Matthew Schooley, who wrote a compelling and spirited 21st century defense of J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye. For this he was awarded $200.
  • 2nd Place: “Liberation Through Controversy: The Transformative Power of Ellen Hopkins' ‘Tricks’” by Alexis Salinas, who reflected on the question of liberation and transformation in Ellen Hopkin’s controversial book, Tricks. For her fine analytical work she was awarded the $100 prize.
  • 3rd Place: “Justifying The Master and Margarita” by Rachel Liu, who explored the folly of censoring free expression through a compelling analysis of Mikhail Bulgakov’s classic satire The Master and Margarita. For this, she was awarded $50.”
