There are moments when we forget how fortunate we are to have the California coast. The state is home to 1,100 miles of uninterrupted coastline defined by long stretches of beach and jagged rocky cliffs. Coastal Sage chronicles the career and accomplishments of Peter Douglas, the longest-serving executive director of the California Coastal Commission. For nearly three decades, Douglas fought to keep the California coast public, prevent overdevelopment, and safeguard habitat. In doing so, Douglas emerged as a leading figure in the contemporary American environmental movement and influenced public conservation efforts across the country. He coauthored California's foundational laws pertaining to shoreline management and conservation: Proposition 20 and the California Coastal Act. In November 2017, the The Forum on Promoting Children's Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Health, in collaboration with the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity, convened a workshop on promoting children's behavioral health equity. The workshop used a socio-ecological developmental model to explore health equity of children and families, including those with complex needs and chronic conditions. Particular attention was paid to challenges experienced by children and families in both rural and urban contexts, to include but not limited to poverty, individual and institutional racism, low-resourced communities, and hindered access to educational and health care services. Workshop participants also engaged in solution-oriented discussions of initiatives, policies, and programs that aim to improve social determinants of health, opportunities for behavioral health promotion, and access to quality services that address the behavioral health of all children and families. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the event.

In 1978, the citizens of California took the historic step of voting forProposition 13, thus reducing property taxes by 57%. Already knownas a trend setting state, California's tax revolt was no different,as similar tax revisions quickly spread across the United States ofAmerica. In California, state and local governments struggled to finda way to manage the loss in revenue. On many occasions budgetcuts were the solution. Library budgets were frequently the target ofthose cuts.  Proposition 13 - America's Second Great Tax Revoltdetails howlibraries prioritized, managed and reacted to hardships in this newworld, and have done so in California for the last forty years whereProposition 13 is still the law. Library and information scienceprofessionals were facing budget cuts that were as high as 65%with little to no guarantee of what future budgets were to be. Theactions they took, and the rationale behind those actions, offersignificant lessons to be learned by the library community on bothan academic and practitioner level.  Exploring the intended and unintended consequences ofProposition 13, this book provides an insightful understanding ofhow to manage a library budget given a difficult funding situation. Itexamines the thought processes behind government financing andspending priorities, and considers how libraries can organize, andparticipate in activism to influence decision makers.

This book covers the two arguments made about guns in the United States today. On the one hand, pro-gun advocates claim that the benefit of gun ownership as protection from crime outweighs the risks of intentional and accidental gun injuries. On the other hand, most gun violence researchers claim that the risks of intentional and accidental gun injuries outweigh the benefits of owning a gun. Based on original surveys of gun owners and non-gun owners, primary data from medical and law-enforcement sources, summaries of noted research from both perspectives and personal experiences culled from more than 50 years in the gun business, this book explains why gun control advocates and gun rights advocates are unable to find common ground to develop regulatory policies acceptable to both sides.The Introduction and Chapter One define gun violence in numeric and demographic terms where gun violence occurs, who are the perpetrators and the victims, and the accuracy of the data is the numerical data used by both sides to support their solutions to the problem. The islands of Alta and Baja California changed dramatically in the centuries after Spanish colonists arrived. Native populations were decimated by disease, and their lives were altered through forced assimilation and the cessation of traditional foraging practices. Overgrazing, overfishing, and the introduction of nonnative species depleted natural resources severely. Most scientists have assumed the islands were also relatively marginal for human habitation before European contact, but An Archaeology of Abundance reassesses this long-held belief, analyzing new lines of evidence suggesting that the California islands were rich in resources important to human populations.Contributors examine data from Paleocoastal to historic times that suggest the islands were optimal habitats that provided a variety of foods, fresh water, minerals, and fuels for the people living there. Botanical remains from these sites, together with the modern resurgence of plant communities after the removal of livestock, challenge theories that plant foods had to be imported for survival. Geoarchaeological surveys show that the islands had a variety of materials for making stone tools, and zooarchaeological data show that marine resources were abundant and that the translocation of plants and animals from the mainland further enhanced an already rich resource base. Educational attainment is a valued goal for all children in the United States, but disparities in educational attainment among population groups have characterized the United States throughout its history. In order to inform actions that can reduce disparities, information is needed to illuminate the level of disparities that exist, why they arise, fad which children are most affected. Educational equity requires that educational opportunity be calibrated to need, which may include additional and tailored resources and supports to create conditions of true educational opportunity. A set of indicators-measures used to track performance and monitor change over time-can help provide this information. Monitoring Educational Equity identifies key indicators of equity for the nation's K-12 education system that fall into two categories: (1) indicators that measure and track disparities in students' outcomes such as kindergarten academic readiness, coursework performance, and on-time graduation; and (2) indicators that measure and track disparities in students' access to resources and opportunities, such as high-quality pre-K programs, effective teachers, rigorous curriculum, and non-academic supports. This report recommends a nationwide, consistently reported system that can inform policies and practices to reduce disparities. Monitoring Educational Equity also serves as a framework to help policy makers better understand and combat inequity in the United States' education system. Book jacket.

The US shale boom and efforts by other countries to exploit their shale resources could reshape energy and environmental landscapes across the world. But how might those landscapes change? Will countries with significant physical reserves try to exploit them? Will they protect or harm local communities and the global climate? Will the benefits be shared or retained by powerful interests? And how will these decisions be made?             The Shale Dilemma brings together experts working at the forefront of shale gas issues on four continents to explain how countries reach their decisions on shale development. Using a common analytical framework, the authors identify both local factors and transnational patterns in the decision-making process.
