Federal vs. State and Local

State and Local Government Information

This resource from the White House website explains the powers of the state and local government as separate from the powers of the federal government. The White House official website also provides information on all branches of the U.S. Government, including the Executive and Legislative branches. This resource should be used to better understand the power each branch holds, which is important to keep in mind when voting for a candidate to hold each office.

This resource from the California Secretary of State is the official website for voter information for the State of California. Information about current and past elections can be found here, as well as how the vote counting system works, how to track your ballot, voter registration and status, and information presented in different languages.

California Government

This resource from the CA Capitol Museum provides information on the California Government. It explains the different branches of government within the State of California and provides information on the Senators, Representatives, the Governor, and Judges. This resource should be used to learn more about how the government of California works.

Voting at the County Level

Voting is available at the county level in California. Measures and candidates on your ballot will be for the State of California in addition to your specific city, county, and district. You will be able to vote for who and what will directly impact where you live.

To find which county you belong to, you can use the California Secretary of State’s County Elections Map. The map provides contact and website information on each county.

Orange County Registrar of Voters

The Orange County Registrar of Voters website provides essential record management and elections services to Orange County residents. They ensure equal access to the election process by providing information on candidates, elections, and voting information. There are resources for registering to vote, sample ballots, voting results, and data and research.

Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk

The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk website provides essential record management and elections services. It provides information on past, current, and upcoming elections in LA County. There are resources for registering to vote, sample ballots, voting results, and candidate statements. 

California Election Statistics

Statistical Resources for California Elections

Statistical information on elections is available through both official government sources and outside data analytics. Statistics help explain how people vote on the local and county levels. Statistical resources include voter turnouts, election results, and voter demographics.

CA Secretary of State - Voter Participation
There is information on voter participation statistics on the Secretary of State website that dates back to the 1990 Primary Election. It shows the number of people eligible to vote, the number of registered voters, and the number of people who voted per county for each election.

Statewide Database Election Data
The Statewide Database (SWDB) is the redistricting database for California. They are a nonpartisan group located on the University of California, Berkeley campus. They provide raw data on election results for the public to access and use. Election data is available for elections dating back to 1992.
