Nexis Uni Advanced Search

Searches in Nexis Uni default to an “or’ search, which means an article only needs to contain one of your words. For a more focused search, use some of the limiters below:

Search Connectors in Nexis Uni

" "          Exact phrase   example: “juvenile delinquent”

And        Two or more words appearing anywhere in the document (alternative: &)

            Example: Obama and portrait   /   Obama & portrait

Or            Document contains one or more of the terms  (This is the default search in Nexis Uni)

and not  Exclude documents containing the word or phrase; must be the last connector

w/n           First word within "n" words of the second, any order (proximity operator)
                  example: custody w/5 grandparents

              Word variations using this as the root word  (currently not functioning)
                  example: alcohol!  (retrieves: alcohol, alcoholic, alcoholism)

Nesting:  Using parenthesis to tell search how to interpret a string of words
                 Example:  (juvenile or minor) w/5 alcohol! 

Shep:       Shepardize a citation.  Alternative, find case and click on Shepardize at the right
                  Example:  shep: 373 U.S. 132
