Not sure where to being with your research assignment? You're in the right place. This guide is your go-to toolkit for tackling projects with less stress and more success. Jump in, grab just what you needs, and start making progress right away.
Sources matter - Does your assignment call for scholarly or peer-reviewed sources? Are you banned from using certain websites or AI as a research assistant? Save time and know the rules before you search.
Count them wisely - If your assignment requires five sources, find at least ten. Some will turn out to be duds.
Match length to sources - No source count? Aim for one great source per page. Writing 5-7 pages? Plan on 5-7 sources.
Cite it right - MLA? APA? Your professor cares. FC Library databases offer read-made citations, but double-check with our citation guide since they're not always perfect.
Start with curiosity.
Ask questions first, not conclusions. Each answer helps you refine your question, moving from broad curiosity to specific focus.
Hold off on the thesis statement.
Jumping in too soon can lock you in. Give yourself space to explore. As you find credible information, your research question gets clearer and your thesis more focused.
Circle back.
Find a source, rethink your angle, dig deeper, ask again. Repeat the cycle.
Shape your answer.
Your question leads to sources, your sources lead to a thesis, and your thesis is backed by that evidence.
Join the Conversation.
Writing your paper isn't just an assignment. It's your chance to join the scholarly conversation and build on what others have said.
