What's the problem?

Information literacy is a skill set that includes the ability to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. These skills include the ability to evaluate information and its sources critically.

Despite the importance of this essential skill, Stanford University researchers discovered that students have trouble evaluating the credibility of online information. In their 2016 report, they found that:

  • Students have trouble evaluating information and may not be able to distinguish between advertisements and news articles.
  • Students may not be able to identify the source of the information and what the biases may be.
  • Students are often unable to distinguish between verified and unverified social media sources.
